Raptors Trade Possibility

The Raptors have had a pretty impressive off-season and have completely changed the make-up of the roster. Last year within the starters, the Raptor lacked a player who could create and make that 'dagger shot' and also lacked athleticism. BC addressed the go-to-man concerns by adding Hedo Turkolu, a player the Orlando Magic entrusted with taking their final shots and Colangelo addressed the athleticism issue by drafting DeRozan and trading for Antoine Wright (in particular for the shooting guard position.) Last year, our bench consisted of the likes of Kapono, Pops, and Humphries but it has been completely revamped with the additions of Jarett Jack, Rasho, Reggie Evans and Marco Bellinelli. There have been some questions about the Raptors back-up small forward, and this article attempts to identify a potential trade that is (slightly far-fetched) but possible.

The Trade: Marcus Banks + Patrick O'Bryant + Second Round Pick To New Orleans for Morris Peterson.

Does it Work Financially?

Because both teams are over the salary cap, the total salaries being traded must be within 125% of each other. The total salary Toronto is taking in is 5,993,240 and the total salary NO is taking in is 5,408,982. They are within 125% of each other.

Marcus Banks earns 4,553,793 this year, 9,401,379 over life of contract (2 years)
Patrick O'Bryant earns 855,189 this year and over term of contract (1 year)
Morris Peterson earns 5,993,240 this year and 12,384,480 over the life of his contract (2 years)

Note: I took these figures from ShamSports.com

Why the Raptors Makes this Trade?

The Raptors would make this trade because they instantly convert two pieces of dead weight off their roster for a serviceable backup shooting guard. Banks and O'Bryant do not figure to play much this year and this trade would provide us with an asset in return.

Peterson has shown in the past that he is a good defender, is not afraid to drive and loves the city Toronto. The roster would be complete for this year and there would be no need to sign Delfino.

Over his career Peterson has averaged 3.6 rebounds a game in 27 minutes, giving him a per-36 rebounding rate of 4.8 which seems below-average for a small forward, but solid nevertheless for a backup. Peterson plays good man-to-man defense and is capable of playing 15-18 minutes a night. At the age of 31, he can provide a veteran's presence while still being able to contribute.

Why New Orleans Makes this Trade?

New Orleans is currently roughly $8,000,000 above the luxury tax and have been making moves to try and lower their cap number this year and for the short-term (such as the Tyson Chandler trade). With this trade, they are able to reduce their salary obligations by $500,000 this year and $1,544,654 next year. Since they are most likely to be over the cap both year, this would translate into a savings of $4,089,308.

Peterson has had declining minutes with NO, and only played 12 mpg last year. He only played in 43 games and started 2. On NO's roster, there is Peja Stojakovic, James Posey and possibly Julian Wright ahead of him on the depth chart.

Conclusions

I think Toronto would definitely make this trade as it is an effective way to remove two useless bodies off of the roster for a productive backup while still remaining under the luxury tax.

I think New Orleans might make this trade because of the significant luxury tax savings and because there is no room for Peterson in the regular rotation. The addition of a second round pick would also sweeten the transaction for New Orleans.

  1. I really can't stomach trading anymore draft picks, even 2nd rounders, but I do this deal. Isn't mopete in a contract year too?

  2. Mo Pete has 2 years on his bad contract left. bad deal

  3. This is a terrible trade idea. I would rather keep Banks on the contract this year and trade him next year because his value would be more with a expiring contract. Mo Pete is wwwaaaayyyyyyy past his prime and wouldn't even contribute more than 2 minutes a game.

  4. You clearly state that what we need is a back up SF... so why on earth would you go and talk about a trade to bring in a SG :\

  5. I probably think that he can play a SF for the raptors. He is 6'7 he could be tall enough for the 3 spot.

  6. I am basically saying trading Banks and his terrible two year deal for peterson and his bad two year contract.

I am not sure what the second and third annoymous mean when they dont agree with this trade because mo pete has two years left. Banks has two years left too! I am proposing trading a deadweight who will not play for a player who could be a backup for the team. Explain, how would bank's contract be more valuable next year than mo petes?

4th annoymous, mo pete is 6'7 and could realistically guard opposing threes. He has played as a small forward before.

  14. it's just a trade proposal. You don't have to agree with it - but respect this guy's time and effort to put it out there! Dumb Raps fans have put together more rediculous proposals than this over the years...

  15. I think this is a creative and logical idea. Moving Banks is going to be very tough. Dino has thought up a win/win situation for Toronto and New Orleans. If New Orleans has zero plans on play MoPete than the 2nd round pick wouldn't need to be added.

Another plus to this idea is MoPete's disposition would fit very well on this team.

  16. You're and idiot and will never be a GM. Both of these players are useless. Giving up a draft pick in a meaningless transaction in your way of improving a ball club? Why are you guys so hung up on the 15th spot on the roster on a marginal contender. Why don't you find something better to do with your time.

  17. I don't mind this deal, Both Patrick O'bryant and Marcus Banks are scrubs, maybe we'd get something out of peterson, at least he'd be better for chemistry then Banks would, I wouldn't want to give up the Pick though, I don't see N0 doing this trade though.

  18. GOOD Trade! All we need for the backup SF to play is 10 Minutes or so a game. Sign Joey for 1.5 million/1 year to battle Peterson at that spot. Then pick up Mikki Moore for the veteran minimum as the 3rd Centre behind Rosho.

    Bam!
    Fifth Seed!!!

  19. Wrong move..Please..no more MO POOP...I had enough of him while he was here and couldn't wait til his contract was over in the first place. When Mo Pete slashed to the basket it was like a awkward baby Giraffe trying to take its first steps. Granted that he's in the NBA I give him some respect for that but Mo is a for sure last resort even if you are just looking for a player who "loves Canada" instead of a player with any talent (may be a average defender..i'll give him that,)then come on back to the Tdot Mo to (as Bill Cosby said)to keep the bench from flying up in to the air when active players are ready to go in and play,(I do know the players have individual chairs. LOL)and keep your stupid headband dry as a bone for the 2009-2010, 2010-2011 season. Nuff said..Boooo for Mo Poop.

  20. Not gonna happen. The luxury tax situation for next year is extremely precarious, and you're proposing to take back more money next year when BC has already made it clear that he's trying to stay flexible for next year. Also not very creative because this supposed trade has been mentioned by many, many other people. For this to be creative, it has to affect more than just the 13-15th spot on the roster.

  21. trade doesnt makes sense, its like trading dead weight for another dead weight. both teams do want to get rid of both players, but not for each other! both contracts dont come off the books till 2011-2012 so i really dont get your point. Mopete WAS great but he's been really injury prone and hasnt played more than 5 mins in an actually game for the past year.
well actually, New Orleans will definitely be interested, because theyre essentially getting a 23yr old 7 footer who's getting paid the min. league salary, for nothing.
i hope BC is not as dumb to make this trade as you are a genius for suggesting it.

  22. Good idea.

Great trade for the Raptors. They give up useless players, for a solid 20 minute talent in Mo Peterson. That's easily worth the cost of the second round pick.

I think the Hornets may need a little more incentive to make the trade. Not sure the cash savings + second round pick are valuable enough for them to give up Mo Pete ... while taking back two of the worst players in the NBA. But it's very close, only a small incentive, maybe cash considerations, an extra million or so.
